ReNew has implemented an effective community-based water management project in Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan, to address the challenges faced by the local population due to water scarcity. The project is part of ReNew’s commitment to creating social goodwill in the community around its operations through community development initiatives.


Jaisalmer is situated in the heart of the Thar Desert, one of the most underdeveloped regions in the country. The district is drought-prone, and the villages face severe challenges with regard to lack of access to drinking water, reduced water availability for agriculture, and shrinking area under cultivation. The construction of the taankas, a traditional rainwater harvesting technique, indigenous to Rajasthan, and the desilting of the community water bodies has provided a sustainable solution to the water scarcity problem in the area. ReNew has constructed 100 taankas with a capacity of around 2100 kiloliters each and desilted four community water bodies, creating a recharge potential of 5,83,348 Cft (16,518.58 kiloliters) and conserving ~18,618.58 kiloliters of water. The project has had a wide-reaching impact across the community, improving the quality of life for the local population.


Outcome

ReNew’s project has not only helped meet the water needs of the community but has also given greater hope of livelihood to the local population. The project has empowered the local community to take charge of their own water management, resulting in greater self-sufficiency and resilience. The community-based water management project is a testament to ReNew’s commitment to sustainability and community development. ReNew has shown that it is possible to implement sustainable solutions to address critical issues such as water scarcity while also contributing to the development of the local community. The success of this project serves as an example of how businesses can partner with local communities to create sustainable solutions for the benefit of all.
