ReNew came a step closer to its vision of becoming a global clean energy and decarbonization leader with the inauguration of its solar PV manufacturing plant at Jaipur, Rajasthan. Inaugurated in August 2023, it is also one of the first solar manufacturing facilities to be commissioned under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for National Programme on High Efficiency Solar PV Modules by the Government of India. Apart from enabling a big leap in the company’s contribution towards India’s energy transition and Atmanirbhar Bharat, this plant is also an embodiment of ReNew’s sustainability practices. Be it renewable power supply for the plant, treatment and recycling of wastewater at the plant, and an inclusive & gender equitable workplace, sustainability lies at the core of the plant. Let’s have a look at the sustainable practices adopted at the plant.

Sustainable Practices at the Jaipur Plant

To understand the sustainable measures adopted by ReNew at the Jaipur plant, let us first understand what sustainable practices entail. Sustainability in manufacturing means producing products through processes that have minimal environmental impact, conserve natural resources and energy, and are economically sound as well.

With 11,303 m2 of green area, the plant will be amongst India’s few LEED Gold-certified solar module manufacturing facilities. By leveraging world-class technologies, the plant produces some of the most efficient solar modules with a capacity of 16,941 modules per day and in the process creating over 1900+ direct jobs.

Solar Rooftop Installations at Manufacturing Units

To cover part of the plant’s power requirements, the facility has a 7.2 MW (DC) solar rooftop system where 13,340 of its own solar modules have been installed.

  • Renewable energy generation capacity: 10 million kWh/annum
  • 28% of plant power requirements from renewable sources
  • Annual CO2 offset: ~7.16 million kg

Water Conservation & management Strategy

An internal sewage treatment plant at the manufacturing facility, helps conserve and minimise the usage of water. After treatment, the wastewater is reused for gardening purposes in the premises and if there are any rare contingencies like wastewater accumulation during heavy rainfall, flood, etc. that are beyond the STP capacity of 65 KLD, it is sent to the Common Sewage Treatment Plant located at the Mahindra SEZ. On account of this, an impressive 80-90% of treated water is reused within the plant, with the remaining sent to the Mahindra SEZ for treatment and reuse. Furthermore, best practices such as auto flush and flow requirements that aligned with the LEED requirements were adopted at the time of plant start-up to reduce the freshwater requirements.

Details of the Sewage treatment plant:

  • Capacity: 65 KLD
  • Wastewater treatment technology: MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor)

Gender Equitable Workplace

Gender equality is an integral part of sustainable development. A crucial part of the Jaipur plant’s sustainability initiatives is its Centre of Excellence which has a special focus on the encouragement of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and boasts a 26% diversity ratio (including apprentices, 2023). The plant also powers a school 30 KM away, fostering future generations through clean energy.

Women health and safety at ReNew solar plant

Committed to gender inclusion, ReNew ensures women's safety & sanitation at the facility. It also prioritizes health and safety with medical rooms at the plant equipped with doctors, BP machines, weighing scales, ECG devices, PPE Kits, etc.

Some other sustainable practices followed at the Jaipur facility include the use of battery-powered material handling equipment and optimal air conditioning. Employees are also encouraged to join in special day celebrations such as Yoga Day, Earth Day, and Environment Day to build a more engaged and livelier workplace while promoting sustainability among employees.

Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals

The Jaipur plant is fully committed to meeting SDG and abides with:

  • SDG 5 - Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
  • SDG 7 - Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all
  • SDG 13 - Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Some of ReNew’s System and Product Certifications

ReNew takes pride in its systems, manufacturing processes, and products, ensuring they adhere to the highest standards. The Jaipur plant features a high degree of automation, adherence to cutting-edge manufacturing standards, and a thorough quality control process, ensuring its products achieve top efficiency ratings. In terms of governance, ReNew adheres to stringent protocols that are compliant with ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001. Some of the noteworthy certifications the company holds that are a mark of excellence and high quality include:

Conclusion

To sum up, Renew’s commitment to sustainable business practices and alignment with the government’s push for clean energy has set a new benchmark for the manufacturing industry.

Kiwa PVEL in their 2024 PV Module Reliability Scorecard has recognized ReNew’s solar panels as a ‘Top Performer’ thus strengthening the company’s reputation on the global forum. The top performer certificate reflects the reliability and quality of ReNew’s solar modules.
